Module 1 - Practical Conservation Knowledge in Hong Kong + Site visit

Since the introduction of Conservation Policy in 2007, there is a handful of completed conservation projects in Hong Kong, they become iconic and popular sites for locals and tourists. Our counterparts start to recognise the opportunities that historic buildings could bring to a development project. While we want to learn from the successful cases and borrow the concepts to other projects, first, we need to understand the rules of the game.

This course intends to give an intensive overview of the current statutory and administrative regulations for historic buildings in Hong Kong and let practitioners from different sectors to have a brief understanding of the resources and opportunities available, in order to generate more creative projects and business opportunities for the industry.

At the end of the day, the trainer will lead a site visit in Blue House and Pak Tai Temple.

Module 2 - Condition Survey and Repair to Historic Buildings
6:30pm to 9:30pm, 23 June 2020

There are over 1,200 historic buildings in Hong Kong and the Government is reviewing to include post-war buildings into the grading assessment, that means there will be more graded historic buildings in the near future.

Majority of our modern buildings are concrete structures and our professional building surveyors have sufficient knowledge to deal with it. However, when it comes to brick and masonry buildings and timber structures, it is another story.

This course focuses on the Hong Kong experience of heritage buildings for the building professional. It is intended to refresh members knowledge of brick, timber and older reinforced concrete buildings and explain what to look for when conducting condition surveys of heritage buildings and methods of defect repair.

Who should attend

Module 1 - Practical Conservation Knowledge in Hong Kong + Site visit

This workshop is designed for practitioners who are interested in the conservation of historic buildings and see that conservation of historic buildings can be an opportunity for their projects. Also for practitioners who need to manage a portfolio including historic buildings. This course will give you an overview of legislations and regulations related to historic buildings in Hong Kong, allowing you to have more understanding on the conservation industry and prepare you to create further business opportunities and projects related to the conservation of historic buildings.

Module 2 - Condition Survey and Repair to Historic Buildings

To get more practical experience of condition surveys and repairs of heritage buildings to enable practitioners to better understand the pitfalls and problems associated with the buildings they may have to deal with professionally for their Clients. To avoid the more common pitfalls and malpractices associated with the categorization of heritage buildings, identification of defects and later additions & alterations, and their remedy and repair.

Ms Candy Chan MRICS, MHKIS, RPS(GP), HKICON

Director of Property Conservation Co. Ltd.

Candy is a chartered general practice surveyor with dual expertise in the property development and heritage conservation industries. Practised in both private and public sectors with experience from major property developer, international real estate consultancy and the Antiquities and Monuments Office. In 2014, she has started her conservation consultancy to provide conservation advisory services.

Since then, she has been involved in a number of conservation studies and conservation-cum-development projects. In 2019, she becomes the Vice President (External Affairs) of HKICON and wants to encourage more corporations between different professional institutions and the HKICON, so as to promote the understanding of architectural conservation.

 
Module 2 - Condition Survey and Repair to Historic Buildings

Mr Robin Howes FRICS, FHKIS, AP/S, RPS/B, HKICON

Managing Director of KCL, FiSEC Ltd.

Robin is a senior Building Surveyor who started his professional working life in the Greater London Council in 1966, spending time in Building’s Regulations Division and District Surveyors Offices.

Arriving in HK in 1975 he spent 22 years in the Building Ordinance Office, starting with Public Works Dept. and ending in Buildings Dept., including long secondments in Lands Dept. for the Kowloon Walled City demolition and Home Affairs Dept., setting up the Office of the Licensing Authority.

On leaving the Gov. in 1996 he spent 2 years building his own house up in the mountains of Cyprus before establishing the local office of Fire Safety Engineering Consultants in 1998. In 2000 he took over Kenward Consultancy Ltd, a building surveying company, to go back to his professional roots dealing with bricks and timber buildings.

Robin joined up with a heritage architect and an engineer to undertake renovations of Tin Hau Temple in Causeway Bay and Lui Ying Lung in Sheung Shui and a major heritage project at Tsing Shan. From there he worked with various heritage companies or on his own doing condition surveys and renovations for older buildings while acting as Surveyor to the Fabric for St. John’s Cathedral and consultant to the Old Dairy Farm Building.
