Saint Brigid's Cathedral, Kildare Town
St Brigid's Cathedral lies at the heart of Kildare Town. Founded by St Brigid in 480 AD, her original hilltop Church of the Oak ('Cill Dara' in Irish), gave rise to the name of the town, county and diocese of Kildare. St Brigid led a double monastery on the site (for nuns and monks). This included a scriptorium which produced the renowed 'Book of Kildare'. The site also contained a Fire House, where St Brigid's nuns maintained a perpetual flame.
The current cathedral was built in the 13th century. 2023 celebrated the 800th year of its current construction, while 2024 marked the highpoint of the Brigid 1500 anniversary celebrations.
St Brigid's Cathedral also contains a 12th century Round Tower and High Cross. It is one of the oldest buildings in continuous use in county Kildare and is a very popular place for visitors and pilgrims. Many concerts and events take place in the cathedral throughout the year.
