- Community Engagement: meet like-minded science enthusiasts and participate in enriching discussions, events, and volunteer opportunities.
About the Observatory
The Hampstead Observatory is one of the few observatories in London regularly open to the public for viewing the heavens.
Built in 1910, we have been open to the public for most of the time since then. Our 6" Cooke refracting telescope, circa the late 1800s and installed in the 1930s, is perfect for viewing the Moon, planets and double stars. As long as the skies are clear, you might get to see Saturn's rings, Jupiter's cloud belts, the craters and mountains on the Moon and some of the brighter 'deep sky' objects - star clusters, nebulae and the odd galaxy.
Visiting is free of charge with a ticket, though donations are very welcome! Thanks to your generous support we can keep our unpaid volunteer-run observatory open, and bring the wonder of astronomy for free to the general public.
