Amaree Women’s Network (UK)
Amaree Women’s Network is a dynamic and inclusive global community that emerged from the shared vision of a group of inspiring women from the Global Majority who participated in the NHS Getting to Equity program cohort 4. Established on 27 March 2023, AWN was born out of a collective commitment to address gender and career progression gaps by creating a robust support system for Global Majority women in nursing, midwifery or allied health professional (AHP) particularly those at band 8C and above, as well as those in senior executive positions within the NHS and partner organisations.
Our Inception: The founding members identified a critical need for a platform that not only addresses the challenges faced by women in nursing, midwifery or AHP but also recognises and celebrates the rich diversity they bring to the healthcare landscape. The inaugural meeting on 27th March 2023, attended by 12 passionate individuals, marked the formal establishment of Amaree Women’s Network.
Mission: At Amaree Women’s Network, our mission is clear – to foster a supportive global network where women in nursing, midwifery or AHP can draw inspiration, find unwavering support, and access resources essential for career progression. We are dedicated to celebrating diversity and addressing the unique challenges encountered by Global Majority women, creating a space that amplifies their voices within the nursing, midwifery or AHP profession.
Our Focus: Recognising the persistent 70/30 gender split in the NHS Workforce Race Equality Standards (WRES) and the striking under-representation of Global Majority women in senior positions, AWN seeks to bridge these gaps. The mean ethnicity pay gap of 28.7 percent reflects not unequal pay for similar roles but the urgent need to elevate Global Majority staff into senior roles (NMC, 2020). We are committed to challenging these disparities head-on.
The Power of Diversity: Research consistently demonstrates that a diverse senior and executive workforce enhances the success of health and care systems, leading to improved health outcomes. Beyond the workplace, diversity fosters increased productivity and promotes the wellbeing of staff. Amaree Women’s Network believes that a more diverse nursing, midwifery or AHP leadership is not only necessary for equity but is crucial for the overall improvement of healthcare delivery.
