Art Brut Biennale
In 2011, institutions in the east of the Netherlands launched an initiative to offer a platform for art by artists with neurodiverse backgrounds, thereby fostering recognition and appreciation for their work. Initially, a museum setting was considered, but the initiators quickly opted for a biennal event centered around an international exhibition and an interactive fringe program. Elvira van Eijl and I were asked to play a leading role in the organization. The first Art Brut Biennale took place in 2012. We chose a biennial because we intended to repeat this event biennially. Now, 15 years later, the Biennial has become an integral part of the world of art brut and outsider art.
The tremendous enthusiasm from the very beginning inspired us, our fellow board members, and the more than one hundred volunteers to continue to grow together in both quality and scope. The last edition showcased work by 200 artists, and 17,500 visitors entered the world of art brut.
