Zine + Architecture - a collection of ideas in writing and design exhibits a selection of zines, or self-produced architectural magazines, featuring a diverse range of discursive positions on architecture produced by M.Arch Y1 students in the Department of Architecture at HKU. The variety of ideas, practices, and polemics offered through these objects span different eras in architecture and touch upon numerous cultural, territorial, and technical matters. Collectively, these zines capture a spectrum of our students’ thoughts concerning the state of contemporary design practice. More generally, this work speaks to the zine’s significance as a medium through which designers can question and push the disciplinary boundaries of architecture in new theoretical and global directions.

The specific self-publishing medium of the zine has active roots in both architecture and Hong Kong, making it the perfect vessel through which diverse, interactive, and design-oriented perspectives can be introduced and displayed to Hong Kong’s public.

These zines reveal the creative visual and textual modes of expression and exchange at the core of our M.Arch design program, and in connection to architecture’s fundamental relationship to writing and graphic design. They also offer a vital and exciting means to further diversify and challenge architectural discourse—and the discipline at large—at a time of uncertainty.

是次展出的獨立建築雜誌由港大建築學碩士一年級生設計，觸及不同文化和技術領域。建築學生們通過小書仔這個特殊的媒介，有意識地傳達設計想法，展示理論和實踐之間的聯繫，同時涉及多文化、跨領域的討論，亦是反省新理論動向，挑戰學科界限，投身全球性語境下的建築對話。這種獨立出版的讀物雖然小眾，它的歷史在建築界和香港乃至世界範圍內卻是貌遠悠長。獨立雜誌以其日常性和互動性，輕鬆潛入大眾生活，傳達設計為本的創意。

注重文本內容和視覺表達的小書仔們體現了建築設計、文字運用以及圖像表達的緊密關係——這正是建築學碩士課程的核心，提供一個在探索時期中討論建築學的平台。希望公眾透過翻閱同學精心設計的小書仔能一起加入這場建築對話，豐富當前學科研究，並展望未來建築業的發展。
