Event description
Learn about the violent volcanic events that shaped a large part of where we live, and the different rocks that this eruption resulted in!

About this Event

Geology is all around us: it is about the world we live in, the ground we walk and build our homes on. Hong Kong has a very rich geology, and this camp gives you an in-depth introduction into the varied geology you can find in this part of the world. You will learn about the violent volcanic events that shaped a large part of the territory, and the different rocks that this resulted in. The course includes three days of field trips into the Geopark to explore the rocks as you can find them in the field, and two days of hands on learning in makerspace, The Foundry.

In the Foundry, one day you will create a volcano and produce realistic lava flows, and then use your volcano to learn how a geologist maps the earth using bore holes. The second day you will try to build earthquake proof buildings – and see if they really are earthquake proof on our quake table.

This course is open to ages 11 - 15

About the F.I.S.H Course Leader: Wouter van Marle is the makerspace manager at The Grove, running regular STEAM activities for the students of The Harbour School in the school’s makerspace, The Foundry.
