Event description
The prestigious photo exhibition showcases some of the world's best visual journalism work, and is set to take place from March 1–21, 2021.

About this Event

Hong Kong will soon get a first-hand look at some of the world’s best visual journalism as selected in the latest World Press Photo annual photography competition. The World Press Photo Exhibition 2020 showcases works from among almost 74,000 entries submitted by over 4,200 photographers from 125 countries.

The Koo Ming Kown Gallery at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in Kowloon Tong will host the exhibition from March 1-21, 2021.

The exhibition features single images and photo stories which an independent jury selected for honors in 8 categories, namely Contemporary Issues, General News, Environment, Nature, Long-Term Projects, Portraits, Spot News and Sports.

The 2020 competition’s top award, the World Press Photo of the Year, went to Japanese photographer E Yasuyoshi Chiba from Agence France-Presse for his image Straight Voice, depicting a young man reciting protest poetry during a blackout in Khartoum, Sudan.

Protests and the role of young activists aiming to bring about change were highlighted by the jury since it was a recurrent theme among the 2020 entries. Among the winners which explored this theme was Hong Kong Unrest, a photo series created by Nicolas Asfouri from Denmark working for AFP.

The exhibition will also feature work recognized in the Digital Storytelling Contest, including Battleground PolyU by DJ Clark from China Daily who won Interactive of the Year, and The “Thin Yellow Line” Standing Between Hong Kong Police and Protesters by Dayu Zhang of the South China Morning Post who won second place in the Short Story category.

The travelling exhibition is brought to Hong Kong with the generous support of the Netherlands Consulate General in Hong Kong and the HKBU Institute of Journalism and Society. Admission is free. Enhanced hygiene and social-distancing protocols will be in place, including compulsory use of face masks and temperature checks. Please check the exhibition social media pages for the latest information on gallery visitation.

The World Press Photo Foundation believes in the power of showing and the importance of seeing high-quality visual stories. It aims to connect the world to stories that matter.

Along with the exhibition, program partners will be hosting side events across the city to feature speakers and award winners.
