Amazon Rainforest Protection (Para, Brazil)

Event image
Event image

How does it work?

In the Brazilian Amazon, forest land that is not used for "productive activities" can be claimed by the government then turned into cattle ranches or exploited by illegal loggers. Revenue from this offset project helps local villagers to acquire legal land ownership rights of their ancestral home and protect it from being taken over by the cattle and logging industry. It will also pay for agroforestry training workshops so that the locals can improve their livelihoods (i.e. by planting sustainable cacao trees) while protecting the rainforest. The covered area protects over 400 families from being displaced and empowers them to protect the forests.

Why did we choose this project?

The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most precious and diverse natural resources on the planet, but also one of the most vulnerable to disappear for commercial purposes. The location of the project makes it an ideal area to be protected, standing at the edge of the deforestation frontier: about 95 percent of all deforestation occurs within 50 kilometers of highways or roads. The government plans a highway to go through the project area - this project is the last defense to prevent destruction. The project builds up the local community's capacity to monitor and evacuate loggers. The project is part of the award-winning sustainability programs of Allcot, with more than 10 years of experience in forestry project management and training that help deliver sustainable development to the local communities served.

What is my impact?

Over 151,105 hectares (373,388 acres) of forest area protected. Prevents 3,000 hectares from being deforested per annum. For every hectare of land (the size of a Rugby field) not cut down or used for cattle pasture, there are 500 tons of CO2 stored in trees (above and below ground). Provides Sustainable Development to the Local population: over 400 families will no longer fear being displaced. By contributing to the project, you empower the local people to protect the forest. The amount of reduction in emissions through avoidance for the entire project is 553,273 tons of CO2 per year. Prevention of net emissions over the project lifetime of 40 years is more than 20 million tons of CO2.

How do we verify the impact?

This project has been independently verified in accordance with the Verified Carbon Standard. You can view at anytime the public project page and offset credit retirement history below. Verra was founded in 2005 by environmental and business leaders who saw the need for greater quality assurance in voluntary carbon markets. Verra serves now as a secretariat for the various standards it develops and programs it manages, as well as having an incubator for new ideas that can generate meaningful environmental and social value at scale.

Safe Water Project (Uganda)

Event image
Event image

How does it work?

Our Safe Water Project supports rural communities in Uganda with no access to clean water sources. Communities either consume unsafe water, which results in a high prevalence of waterborne diseases; or purify water, usually by boiling it over open fires. The project works with experienced technicians to rehabilitate and install water points or repair the existing ones.

Why did we choose this project?

Drinking clean water is a luxury for families in rural Uganda. Local water is contaminated with loads of pathogens and thus needs to be boiled before drinking. Gathering wood, making the fire and waiting for water to boil over an open fire takes hours, all for just a sip of safe water. Furthermore, this process is usually done by the women in the house who also inevitably breathe in some of the smoke. By constructing or rehabilitating the boreholes, children and families have access to clean water in their proximity. This project not only provides climate benefit by reducing wood-burning and it also brings numerous social benefits such as improved health and economic opportunities for women. Sustainable development benefits delivered by this project include:

What is my impact?

For every borehole that is rehabilitated or constructed there is a saving of 14,000 tones of wood and over 4 million liters of water supplied to over 500 people on a yearly basis. For every 1 USD invested in clean water and sanitation, there is an economic return of up to 34 USD for the community. (World Health Organization)

How do we verify the impact?

This project has been independently verified in accordance with the Gold Standard for Global Goals. You can view at anytime the public project page and offset credit retirement history below. The Gold Standard is the globally recognized verification body that was established in 2003 by WWF and other international NGOs to ensure projects that reduced carbon emissions featured the highest levels of environmental integrity and also contributed to sustainable development.

Biogas Clean Cooking Stove (Sichuan, China)

Event image
Event image

How does it work?

The project team visits the low-income rural households to build biogas digesters and efficient biogas cookstoves for them. The digester tanks are fed with animal manure, previously just discharged into open pits, and convert it into clean and affordable biogas to be used conveniently for cooking, heating, or lighting instead of coal and firewood.

Why did we choose this project?

The installation of a biogas digester to handle animal manure does not only reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but it also helps to improve rural living conditions in many different ways. After switching to biogas, the households’ disposable savings increased 40% due to saved energy and fertilizer expenditures, higher agricultural output, etc.

What is my impact?

Each cookstove system built will be able to reduce 2 tons of carbon emission per year, with an average lifetime over 10 years with proper use and care. To date, this project has built cookstoves for 395,435 rural households and have reduced over 6 million tons of carbon emissions.

How do we verify the impact?

This project has been independently verified in accordance with the Gold Standard for Global Goals. You can view at anytime the public project page and offset credit retirement history here. The Gold Standard is the globally recognized verification body that was established in 2003 by WWF and other international NGOs to ensure projects that reduced carbon emissions featured the highest levels of environmental integrity and also contributed to sustainable development.
