What's all this about? The Zhongyuan Festival (Hungry Ghost Festival): In traditional ethnic Chinese culture, it is a season of "memory" and "caring." We burn incense and offerings to remember ancestors, and charities distribute rice to those in need.But here in Sheffield, far from home, we want to remember in a different way—using our hands, a piece of sugar, and the "just right" temperature.Hong Kong artist RiK will be hosting a sugar crafting workshop at C&amp;G Artaparment, Sheffield. This isn't just about making something edible; it's about making a gift for yourself. This Zhongyuan, let no one be lonely. Pull a piece of sugar, send a piece of warmth.The "care" in Zhongyuan Festival is often outward-facing, but this time, we want to bring it back to the self. Sugar crafting is a craft of "confrontation" and "reconciliation." Sugar is naturally cold, hard, and brittle—like a heart worn down by daily wear and tear. You must use heat to wake it up, turning it from solid to fluid.The temperature of the sugar, if too hot, it burns; if too cold, it cracks. Only at the suitable temperature can you pull it, shape it, and offer it.This temperature is the gentlest care you can give to yourself and others.By adopting traditional intangible cultural heritage techniques to create small sugar sculptures —a flower, a ghost, a goldfish, a bird, or even an abstract, nameless form—anything you can imagine that carries warmth. These sweets will then be "sent out": to elders you wish to thank, to friends who need a bit of sweetness, or to the "lifeguard" within you who has been working so hard on the shore. We aren't chasing "perfection"; we are chasing our own rhythm within that "Periphery of Light and Shadow."1. Introduction to sugar crafting as Intangible Cultural Heritage. 2. Pull Sugar experiment and practice: 3. Crafting 2-3 unique sugar sculptures. Notes: * Suitable for ages 18+ *Ages 12-18 must be accompanied by an adult * Materials: either Maltose or Isomalt (Isomalt, diabetic-friendly, but moderate consumption is advised).
