Event description
Architectural tour of historic Wan Chai by Dr. Jennifer Lang

About this event

Learn about the fascinating history and growth of the Wan Chai settlement as it originally emerged in 1841 as an exclusive European residential district along the shores of Wan Chai Bay evolving through extensive land reclamation and development with working-class tong lau housing, and industrial and commercial enterprises into a dense urban metropolis in the late 19th century. This architectural walking tour will include visits to various buildings from different time periods including the Green House/Comix Home Base, the Blue House Cluster, the former Wan Chai Market, Pak Tai Temple, Hung Shing Temple, and the former Wan Chai Post Office.

We will provide headsets to enable our group to remain socially distant while following along with the tour.

The tour will be followed by lunch in Wan Chai, restaurant TBD.

Jennifer Lang is an architectural historian and conservationist with over 30 years of combined professional and academic experience in built-heritage conservation. Currently she is the Director of the MSc(Conservation) program and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong where she directs and teaches graduate students in architectural conservation.
