Description

WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO: Hike to the Fan Lau Fort 分流炮台 with stops at the Shek Pik Hong Hau 侯古 Temple, the Colonial Boundary Obelisk, and the Fan Lau Tin Hau 天后 Temple.

WHERE WE'RE GOING TO MEET: We'll meet at Tung Chung MTR Station Inbound and we'll break up at the Miu Wo Bus / Ferry Terminal.

• New Lantau Bus No. 11 from Tung Chung Bus Terminal to Shek Pik Reservoir $11.8

• New Lantau Bus No. 1 from Shek Pik to Miu Wo Bus Terminal $8.0

• LUNCH. As many of you know we spontaneously find restaurants on our adventures. Indeed, it's often PART of the adventure. We endeavor to keep the costs below $100 per person and I'm fairly certain that we'll be able to honor that in Miu Wo.

• Miu Wo to Central Ferry. "Normal" Ferry Standard $13.6 / Deluxe $21.3, "Fast" Ferry $26.8 *

WHY YOU SHOULD GO: You'll be exploring a Qing Dynasty Fort, a British Colonial Boundary Marker with some stunning views, and check out two remote temples one dedicated to Hong Hau 侯古 AND the other Tin Hau 天后. It will be A LOT of fun!

Perched on the extreme southwestern part of Lantau Island 大嶼山, Fan Lau Fort 分流炮台 (aka Tai Yue Shan Fort 大嶼山炮台 aka Kai Yik Point Fort 雞翼炮台) was yet another imperfect pearl in the necklace of naval installations designed to protect the coast from the ever-present South China Sea pirate menace during the Qing Dynasty. Lantau Island itself boasts at least two such forts (Tung Chung Fort 東涌炮台 being the other) and we really shouldn't forget the granddaddy of them all the Kowloon City Garrison in what is now Kowloon Walled City Park 九龍城寨 in Kowloon. Sacred Spaces has visited the other aforementioned forts so now it's time to put on our walking shoes and visit Fan Lau.

This is going to be a hiking trip if there ever was one. Taking up the better part of Section 8 of the Lantau Trail we'll start at the Tung Chung Bus Terminal taking Lantau Bus 11 or 23 to the Shek Pik 石壁 Reservoir area where we'll start our walk. We'll at first encounter the Shek Pik Hung Hau Temple and once we pay our respects we'll continue on past the Tai Long Wan Campground. We'll then happen upon a little known colonial boundary obelisk and look out 200 meters above sea level to some stunning seascapes. We'll finally walk past the Kau Ling Chung Campsite when we'll get to Fan Lau on the tip of Kai Yik Point or Chicken Wing Point (I'm NOT making this up, I promise!)

Once we've had our fill of the fort and the nearby Tin Hau Temple, we'll make our way back to Miu Wo for some lunch and those of us who are urban dwellers can take a ferry to Central Ferry Terminal. The Hike is rated at "Difficult" and suppose to be roughly one and half hours one way but I'm going to walk it myself in the upcoming weeks and I'll let you know.

As always I'll be providing more information in the upcoming weeks including maps, bus schedules, photos, some background history, and anything else I think it relevant. I look forward to welcoming you first timers and seeing the veterans again for what promises to be a REAL adventure.
