The Talk - Taking action to save our seas - In & out of the water

How can the seas sustain our continued assault of plastic waste?

In 2020, Hong Kong generated 126kg of plastic waste per person.

During the pandemic, if every person in Hong Kong has been wearing one mask a day, in one month we have used 225 million masks - equivalent in weight to seven blue whales.

While cleanups on the beach can help highlight the issue and educate the next generation, there is also a problem to be addressed under the water.

Join Plastic Free Seas for a discussion focusing on the issue of plastic marine pollution both globally and locally, and how individuals can make a difference with their everyday actions. Plastic Free Seas CEO Dana Winograd will share an overview of plastic waste sources (on land and at sea), practical solutions to reduce the use and disposal of single-use plastics, and the latest details on the recycling landscape here in Hong Kong.

Details of upcoming joint Beach/Dive clean up collaboration between Plastic Free Seas & Sai Kung Scuba will also be released.

The Speaker: Dana Winograd - CEO & Co-Founder of Plastic Free Seas

Dana has lived in HK for over 26 years and first got involved with environmental issues in 2007 when she helped drive recycling in Discovery Bay where she lives.

Seeing that it would take more than recycling to help solve the problem of plastic marine pollution, Dana joined PFS from the beginning to help promote change in people’s use of plastic through education and action. She has delivered hundreds of talks on waste reduction and personal behaviour change to students of all ages, and has been invited as a guest speaker by many corporate and community groups since 2013.

The Venue - Cafe 8

Located on the rooftop of Pier 8, Café 8 is a unique collaboration between the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and The Nesbitt Centre and creates a progressive environment for members of our society with learning disabilities.

This social enterprise not only to provides employment opportunities to those with special needs, but enables them to integrate with the local community, interact with people from all walks of life, and expand their work and life experiences – all of which are essential for their future development
