Seminar overview:

Urban development in the past century has turned Hong Kong from a small and isolated fishing village in the remote southern China into a modern metropolis. During the course of the development, Hong Kong has reclaimed land, and created infrastructure and building assets to meet the needs of people and its own evolution.

Now the area of Fortress Hill to Siu Sai Wan, the Eastern District was originally a backwater of fishing villages, quarries and dockyards on the northern eastern part of Hong Kong Island. It made up most of the Hong Kong Island's north shore, and was served by tramways running from its east to the west. Though the district has undergone tremendous urbanisation, we can still identify traces of characters and features unique to an individual community that once existed along the coastline of the Island.

In this seminar, the speaker will guide delegates through the century-long evolution of Hong Kong's Eastern District with pictures taken in the old times. In addition to recalling collective memory, these carefully selected photos will reveal the transformation of urban landscape and community with time, allowing us to understand the history and stories behind city development. The speaker will explain how infrastructural development transforms a district, from a tiny neighbourhood that made up of a King's Road served by tramway, into the second highest populated district in Hong Kong now.
