Touching the Future Internet: Creating Distributed Media Experiences with TouchDesigner and Named Data Networking

This hands-on workshop explores how Future Internet technologies will impact dynamic media artworks and multimedia systems. It introduces the proposed Named Data Networking future internet architecture and demonstrates it through integration with Derivative's TouchDesigner real-time media environment. 
The workshop is targeted for media artists, interactive systems designer, networking researchers and others interested to explore what moving beyond TCP/IP networking may offer to creative communities. It explores how to build distributed systems that generate and manipulate media (video) in real-time using prototype open-source media components for TouchDesigner. 
Participants will learn about this new toolset (TouchNDN) for low-latency video dissemination and live video multi-dimensional editing, specifically: • efficiently multicast HD (4K) video to multiple machines in a local network with minimal end-to-end playback latency, and future potential; • perform seamless playback between live and stored video content; • synchronize video playback from multiple sources; • perform edge-assisted live video analysis with machine learning components and generate frame metadata for playback manipulation; • use TouchNDN to create a "media" message bus for distributed systems. 
The workshop is structured as a full-day activity, including a 3-hour session for the introduction and demo of the TouchNDN toolset capabilities, and a 2-hour “follow along” practical tutorial in the afternoon. An open lab will follow for discussion and interaction with other participants and the instructors.
 Participants are required to bring their laptops with installed latest version of TouchDesigner. The workshop audience is expected to have basic familiarity with TouchDesigner software and some experience using it.
