The Impact of Communication Styles on Expertise Recognition in Intercultural Group Collaboration

[Abstract] Effective utilization of group members’ expertise is vital for a group to achieve high performance. Many groups, however, frequently experience difficulties in identifying experts in their groups. In intercultural collaboration, such difficulties can intensify. In this presentation, Professor Yuan will provide an overview of a number of her recent studies on how communication styles may influence expertise judgment and recognition in intercultural group collaboration.

Connie Yuan is an Associate Professor at the Department of Communication of Cornell University. She teaches and conducts research in the area of organizational communication. Specially, she is interested in studying knowledge management through the development of social capital, transactive memory systems and the adoption and usage of information and communication technology. Her recent studies also explore how cultural differences may influence the effectiveness of group collaboration. She has received multiple fundings from NSF of the U.S. to support her research endeavors. She has published in all the flagship journals in the field of communication. A number of her works have received research awards at major conferences in both the fields of communication and management.
