Event description

Responsible Production - Is Luxury Sustainable?

Luxury brands are rapidly expanding in societies across the globe. With this expansion, luxury is becoming increasingly accessible and losing its exclusivity. But did exclusivity provide us with a more sustained model of consumption – producing less but for longer? At a time when environmental, economic and social risks are increasing and our global resources under threat, questioning the concept of luxury feels more important than ever.

Chaired by Alexander from The Mills Fabrica, this talk brings together, designers, brand owners and social thinkers for a discussion about luxury, design and sustainability.

This panel discussion is part of our Media Pre-Launch Preview, expect conscious cocktails by The Glass Formula and a decatant vegan spread by Supafood, live DJ, networking and more, this is a ticketed event with a seated capacity of 60 people.

- Alexander Chan, Co-Director, The Mills Fabrica

- Alexandra Foster, Founder, A.C.F

- Fanny Moizant, Co-Founder, Vestiaire Collective

- Anneleise Smillie, Executive Director, Redress

About the Panelists:

Alexander Chan:

Alexander Chan is currently the Co-Director of The Mills Fabrica- a leading Hong Kong based incubator/ fund/ space dedicated towards promoting innovations and sustainable businesses at the intersection of technology and style. Alexander currently leads investments (Fabrica Fund) and also helps with incubation support and government/ policy related affairs.

Alexander previously worked in consulting and private equity focusing on consumer and TMT investments. He was part of Bain’s Private Equity Group in Greater China as well as with Hillhouse Capital’s Global Consumer team focusing on bringing leading consumer brands from US/ Europe into China.

Alexander is also an occasional contributor to SCMP, HKFP and Stand News in Hong Kong where he writes on issues related to innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability.

Alexandra Foster:

A.C.F founder Alexandra Foster moved her life from Australia to Hong Kong in 2016 after 9 years in the industry learning about the environmentally devastating, waste and human exploitation within the fashion industry. Seeking to create a new kind of sustainable fashion label, one that was modern, affordable and represented a relevant social movement toward responsible consumption; A.C.F was born.

Alexandra designs all collections in Hong Kong, merely 40 minutes from our manufacturing partner where all of the garments are produced responsibly & ethically in Southern China. Fabrics used in A.C.F collections are repurposed deadstocks, and all waste off-cuts are reimagined into by-products and donated to charities that are close to her heart; supporting the local Chinese communities, animal welfare and cancer research.

Fun Fact – Alexandra’s Great Aunt was King Farouk of Egypt’s dressmaker in the 1940’s!

Fanny Moizant:

Born and raised in France, Fanny Moizant spent her formative years in the fashion boutiques of her mother. She went on to work for several fashion and apparel brands such as John Galliano and Dim and Mexx, eventually taking a position with the French interior company, Venilia.

After having her two daughters, Moizant was inspired to start her own company. She came up with the idea to launch Vestiaire Collective after observing French fashion bloggers selling their out-of-season designer clothing, to reinvest in new, fashionable items.

Moizant teamed up with five partners with experience in styling, logistics and business development to launch Vestiaire Collective in France in 2009. At launch, they offered 3,000 items of second-hand merchandise collected from family and friends. Their first sale? One of Moizant’s own Gucci handbags, long coveted by a close friend.

Anneleise Smillie:

Anneleise has 17 years of international experience in the non-profit sector working in Hong Kong, China and London. As Executive Director she is focused on organisational development and working with the team to formulate new planning processes and strategies for sustainable growth, whilst focusing resources where they will have the greatest impact. Previously Anneleise worked for the Animals Asia Foundation and Brooke Hospital for Animals and has been directly involved with Fundraising, Programme Operations, Event Management and Public Education. Anneleise is an environmentalist at heart and is passionate about reducing waste and promoting new models that create lasting social change.
