About this event

Health • Mental health

How can art become a sensibility to re-imagine mental illness, transforming it from a state of personal vulnerability into a site of social control and ideological interpellation?

As part of the exhibition The Faceless under the Mask, an artist talk featuring Ricky Yeung Sau Churk and Angela Su, the two participating artists in the exhibition, they would share their works in the exhibition and how they explore illness as a contested territory of control and resistance.

Ricky Yeung’s new commissioned work in the exhibition delves into the profound reconfiguration of the self in the face of illness. He proposes a radical shift: 病有我 "to make illness the subject." In this framework, the individual does not have an illness but belongs to it. Angela Su, in her video essay The Afterlife of Rosy Leavers, tracing the legacy of the Socialist Patients' Collective (SPK) and their infamous slogan, "Turn illness into a weapon," which sought to channel the plight from mental distress into a revolutionary attack against the capitalist system.

This conversation promises to be a gripping exploration of the dialectics of weakness and power. Can mental illness be a form of resistance, or is it ultimately a condition of profound vulnerability to external systems? Join us as these artists guide us through the precarious boundary where the fragile self meets the ideologies that seek to define it.
