Description
THIS IS A TEST. THIS IS NOT A REAL EVENT.
This lecture explores the history and development of landscape imagery found on Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. The nonlinear evolution of this motif from the Yuan to Qing dynasties will be illustrated with images of numerous works including examples from the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Landscape decoration on Chinese porcelain profoundly shaped the ways the natural environment of China was imagined beyond her borders for centuries and influenced the work of ceramicists around the world. In the mid to late Qing dynasty, landscapes on porcelain transformed from more generalized and stylized images to depictions of specific sites. The method of representing landmarks on European ceramics may have influenced this development in Chinese porcelain. Features of landscape decoration will also be discussed as useful means of determining the date of manufacture of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain.
