About this Workshop
The Startup101 workshop series is designed to help entrepreneurs and SMEs better understand and successfully use common and fundamental modern business tools. Join us on Monday, September 22 where Timothy Letters and Laurence Thoo will talk about the increasingly relevant and important topic of intellectual property including patents and trademarks. With almost fifteen years of intellectual property, venture capital and commercial experience, they will provide both a practical and relevant overview of what intellectual property is all about as well as specific examples of how IP can help and hurt you and your business. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and raise real life situations as discussion topics.

About Speakers
Timonthy Letters
Timothy is a registered Australian and New Zealand Patent Attorney, a registered Australian Trade Mark Attorney, and a Fellow of the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia, having more than 13 years of experience in the intellectual property field. He previously practiced in both a boutique patent practice and commercial law firm in Australia for 6 years prior to commencing practice in Hong Kong in 2006.
Timothy’s technical qualifications include Bachelors and Masters (by research) degrees in Mechanical and Orthopaedic Engineering from the University of Sydney, and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of New South Wales. He also holds a Master of Industrial Property Law (IP Law) from the University of Technology, Sydney.
Currently, Timothy is the Chairman of the Patents Review Committee, Asian Patent Attorneys Association Hong Kong (APAA), as well as being a Panel Member of the Patents Standing Committee of APAA. APAA is the recognised industry representative body in Hong Kong, and Panel Members regularly meet with the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department in an advisory capacity to discuss aspects of intellectual property, including patent law and practice.
Laurence Thoo
Laurence is a registered Australian Patent Attorney, registered New Zealand Patent Attorney and a registered Australian Trade Mark attorney, having more than 13 years of experience of practice in the intellectual property field.
Prior to entering the Patent Attorney profession, Laurence was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) from the University of Sydney, a Master of Industrial Property Law from the University of Technology Sydney, and, a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Wollongong. He previously practised at leading intellectual property firms Deacons (2007-2013) in Hong Kong, and before that, at Davies Collison Cave (2000-2007) in Sydney Australia (which is Laurence’s hometown).
He currently serves on the Designs Standing Committee of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (Hong Kong), is a Fellow of the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia (FIPTA), and is also a member of Federation International des Conseils en Propriete Industrielle (FICPI), the International Trademark Association (INTA), and an affiliate member of the Hong Kong Institute of Trade Mark Practitioners (HKITMP).
