Event description

Description

The Smart Cultural Triangle Precinct (SCTP) project is aimed to be a comprehensive, bottom-up, place-making initiative involving multi-sectoral participation from the community, the public, academia, public and private sectors to create a cultural precinct in the heart of the historic Central District. SCTPcapitalises on the government initiated conservation and adaptive reuse of the Central Police Station (CPS), also known as Tai Kwun, Police Married Quarters (PMQ), and the Central Market (CM). The objective is to develop conservation and revitalisation plan for the area that promotes the city’s culturalheritage and re- brands Hong Kong’s multi-faceted city image. The SCTP in Central aims to conserve the traditional street culture and enhance the neighbourhood vibrancy through urban design interventions, place-making and traffic calming initiatives to improve the pedestrian environment with high quality public realm.

On June 9th, putting on the lens of the world renowned urbanist Jane Jacob, we will organize a SCTP walk in the Central district along with the local residents. The tour will look into the past of Central, and envision the future possibility to transform the area into the SCTP.

The tour will give a glimpse of the unique urban setting with some of its remaining heritage components, such as the historic tenement buildings and the adaptive reuse of major developments in Central. The walking tour covers the areas within the Cultural Triangle formed by PMQ, a creative hub successful in promoting local art and design, the CPS will soon open with its adaptive reuse for art culture and exhibition space and the CM which is to be adaptively reused as a market and other related uses.

The tour begins at H6 Conet, a recent project by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) to reutilize and revitalize abundant underground spaces in Central showcasing the heritage of the area. We will take the mid-levels escalator from CM, one of the oldest historical buildings in Hong Kong. From the escalator, we will observe the urban life and various activities in the streets. We will also overlook the H18 construction site, an on-going redevelopment by URA. We will then proceed to PMQ throughStaunton Street, which has a change in scenery. An internal tour will be held on PMQ, a revitalized heritage building that is transformed to a creative hub. Afterwards, we will head to Tai Kwun through Hollywood road in the company of street arts and historical buildings. The tour ends at Tai Kwun, where it becomes a gathering spot for art and heritage. From exploring the area, participants will experience the rich heritage andculture. They will learn about the potential future transformation of the area as we showcase the interesting urban features. Throughout the tour, participants are encouraged to share their thoughts on how this area could become a SCTP with its rich heritage and cultural resources.
