Event description

Description

In the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis, a new story about the role of business in society is emerging. This new narrative puts purpose, ethics, and values at the very center of thinking about how business and capitalism can be improved.

There are a number of key principles that make up this narrative, one of which is the idea that creating value for all stakeholders is a cornerstone of how business actually works.

Darden Professor Ed Freeman will show how entrepreneurs and established businesses are implementing this new narrative of business that he calls “Responsible Capitalism.”

This talk aims to provide these three take-aways by the end of the session:

  • (1) Understand the importance of purpose for building a great company.

  • (2) To engage in no-tradeoff thinking in managing stakeholder relationships.

  • (3) Techniques for building a culture of purpose, ethics, and engaging stakeholders.

About Professor Ed Freeman, Professor of Business Administration at Darden School of the University of Virginia. As his father files an expense report, he turns to his son at tells him "how easy it was to cheat, but it was the wrong thing to do". At that moment, it was what crystalized Ed's interests in ethics in business. After a PhD in Philosophy, Ed ended up teaching at Business School, and was was amazed at the dominant stories of how business ethics is a condradiction. Ed believes that ethics and business goes together, and spent the last 30 years crafting a story in which the two will eventually come hand-in-hand in harmony.
