About this event

In this public lecture, Prof. Lowe will talk about his memoir “The Alarmist: Fifty Years Measuring Climate Change”, which illustrates that the climate emergency has serious consequences for humans, involves complex science, system resilience, political leadership and action that depends on public support as with COVID-19.

Professor Dave Lowe is an atmospheric chemist and one of the lead authors of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize-winning IPCC Fourth Assessment Report on Climate Change. Prof Lowe was one of several New Zealand scientists who contributed toward the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), set up jointly by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme. The Nobel Peace Prize 2007 was awarded jointly to the IPCC and Al Gore "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.“

Prof Lowe established the Baring head clean air monitoring station near Wellington in 1972. This station, now maintained by NIWA, has the longest continuous record of atmospheric CO2 in the mid latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere providing vital data for international climate change science.

The public lecture will start at 4:00pm on Wednesday 29th September at Room 403, Sir Paul Reeves Building in the AUT City Campus. Refreshments (soft drinks & finger food) will be served from 3:00pm.
