Event description

Description

Join us for an entertaining evening presented by local historian, Jason Wordie on the topic of Prostitution in Hong Kong, a historical overview. Prostitutes were among the first women to migrate to Hong Kong after 1841. By the 1870s, it was estimated that one in four Chinese women resident in the colony were prostitutes of some description.

Brothels remained licenced until the 1930s, and until that era the trade enjoyed considerable regularization – and even a measure of respectability. In this lecture we will explore the legal and social position of prostitutes in Hong Kong up until recent years, with specific reference to Chinese and European experiences of the trade.

This evening's lecture is part of a series of talks given by Jason on Hong Kong historical overviews. The next overview topic will be on Opium - in Hong Kong to be presented on 26 June 2018, same venue.

The talk will be held in a private room at Cafe Siam, LKF with Thai snack food and 2-hours of unlimited red & white wine, Singha beer and soft drinks included in the price.

Come join us for an entertaining and enriching evening!
