Originally opened in 1952, the State Theatre is Hong Kong's last surviving large-scale theatre and currently a Grade I listed historic building. In October 2020, Adrian Cheng of New World Development (NWD) announced a conservation project to meticulously conserve and transform this iconic building into a premier cultural and arts venue:

The parabolic exoskeleton truss design of the roof structure bears witness to the history of North Point, which was once dubbed “Little Shanghai”. To formulate a comprehensive plan for conservation and re-development, NWD assembled a multifaceted team of local and international consultants with extensive experience in heritage conservation.

Join us on a journey through time, when we will explore the rich history and cultural significance of the State Theatre. We will go "behind the scene" and be briefed on the challenges encountered by the design team during the conservation process so as to better appreciate the State Theatre's historical prominence. We will also take a peek into its exciting future as an innovative multi-purpose performance venue.

Mr. Jeff Tung
Head of Special Projects (Project Management)
New World Development Company Limited

Jeff has overseen numerous special projects for NWD, including the remodeling of New World Centre into Victoria Dockside, and the rejuvenation of the Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront. He is currently managing the State Theatre conservation project.

Jeff is a Registered Architect and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects. He graduated from the University of Hong Kong and has been working in the building industry for 38 years. His extensive experience includes the planning, design and project management of mixed-use, commercial and hotel projects both in Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Ms. Winnie Yeung
Head of Heritage Management
New World Development Company Limited

Winnie is an architectural conservationist with a master’s degree from the Architectural Conservation Programme at The University of Hong Kong. From 2015 to 2020, she was the Head of Heritage at the Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts which received the Award of Excellence in the 2019 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

Previously, Winnie was the heritage manager for the UNESCO-awarded Tai O Heritage Hotel and has participated in other similar projects in Hong Kong and Singapore. She specializes in heritage interpretation, exhibitions, education and community engagement, with the aim of celebrating the significance of historic places while raising cultural awareness and fostering community involvement.

Mr. Roger Wu

Roger has experience on large-scale master planning, commercial and mixed-use developments in China, the United States, and Europe. He has also led complex restoration projects of historic buildings in Hong Kong, China and the UK. Between 2014 and 2022, Roger was the Executive Director of Project Development for the Haw Par Music Foundation Limited (HPMF), a not-for-profit organisation set up to oversee the operations of Haw Par Music - a center for the cross-cultural exchange of music, heritage and the arts based in the revitalized Haw Par Mansion in Tai Hang, Hong Kong.

Roger is actively involved in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and also lectures at both the University of Hong Kong (HKU) MSc Programme in Conservation and the HKU Space MA Programme in Art and Cultural Enterprise.
