This iconic line first appeared in the early 2000s cult hit by Hong Kong rap group MP4, charting how underground rave venues were washed up with first ecstasy, then ketamine, and then finally cocaine.

What makes one type of high particularly—and dangerously—attractive, and how does Hong Kong consume drugs? With tales from Hong Kong’s underworld, Karen investigates the cultural significance of locally trending drugs, and the impact of global trade of illicit substances.

「Hey... 你老豆索K！」 二千年代初，饒舌樂隊MP4曾以此名曲講述在香港地下夜場和Rave Party裏搖頭丸和「K仔」泛濫的情況，可卡因更是膾炙一時。

為甚麼有些藥物會比別的更受歡迎？香港又是個怎樣的藥品消費市場？從何時起，偶爾純為好玩而吸毒，會慢慢轉變成長期的毒癮？

Karen 將講解這些疑問，並就香港及世界毒品市場的轉變和發展趨勢，分享她的觀察。

Speaker:

Karen Laidler is a Professor of Sociology and Director of the Centre for Criminology at the University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on drugs, sex work, youth gangs and women’s imprisonment. A native San Franciscan, she has been involved in criminological research since the 1980s, working with non-profit organizations and government agencies in Northern California. She moved to Hong Kong in the 1990s, and has witnessed the development of the city’s drug market over the past decades. Her recent projects include a study on parallel trading between Hong Kong and mainland China, and its implications for identity politics.

教授簡介

Karen Laidler 是香港大學社會學系教授和犯罪學研究中心總監。她主要研究範圍包括毒品，性行業，童黨和婦女監獄。在三藩市成長的她於1980年代已在北加州和非牟利組織和政府機構合作，進行犯罪學研究。她於九十年代移居香港，在過去二十年間見證了香港販毒行業的發展。她最近研究關於香港和中國大陸之間 "水貨客" 的活動，以及其對身份政治的含義及影響。
