Event description
Join us to learn about marine conservation and enjoy an outing at the HK geological park!

About this Event

This is a one-day Project AWARE specialty program. We’ll be learning the Project AWARE program on a boat and then explore the unique Nine Pin Island and explore the geological park in Hong Kong.

The Project AWARE Specialty course is an introduction to Project AWARE as a global movement for ocean protection.. Through interactive discussions, students will learn how you can make a difference for ocean protection every time they dive, swim or travel. A dry, ‘fins off’ course, this specialty is ideal for students alike to gain insight into how decisions above and below the surface impact our water planet. Students will receive a certificate after they attend the course.

The Ninepin Islands is a group of rocky outcrops at the edge of the South China Sea. Battered by relentless waves and winds, wonderful landforms have formed. It is also the place where the hexagonal rock columns are at their largest, with diameters of over two meters. We’ll learn about the geology of these rocks.

The boat trip, through attractive scenery and then open seas to the islands, first visits the North Nine Pin Island to see and walk over the beautifully developed hexagonal columns, some of which have toppled over above a large rock slide. The second stop is on the South Nine Pin Island at a sea arch developed along a fault. The trip also includes a circumnavigation of the islands to view the spectacular cliff scenery.

Following the circumnavigation of the Nine Pins, the trip goes to the Bluff Island area. Subject to timing, the boat may also stop at either Bluff Island or High Island, where there is an interesting hike to visit similar fine hexagonal columns and a sea cave, plus a visit to a local island village with a temple. Students will also be able to snorkel and enjoy the spectacular underwater views.

Learning outcomes

• Students will learn the role Project AWARE Foundation plays in protecting aquatic ecosystems worldwide.

• Students will learn the importance, and the interdependent nature, of aquatic ecosystems.

• Students will learn the pertinent issues concerning the environmental status of underwater environments, such as pollution, fisheries and coastal zone management.

• Students will learn the information needed to take specific actions to help conserve underwater environments.

• Students will learn about the geology and geography of the Hong Kong UNESCO Geological park

Encompass HK + Koding Kingdom SDG / STEM Educational Excursions

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

“The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership.”

Our SDG / STEM Educational Excursions are a series of educational excursions in different parts of Hong Kong, combining an outdoor nature element together with a hands-on scientific learning components. Our excursions combines the objectives of SDG 4 Education with different SDG Elements, including SDG 11 Sustainable Cities, SDG 14 Life Below Water, SDG 15 Life on Land among others. All our STEM activities are students-friendly, with worksheets and quiz to enhance students learning. Our activities are suitable for students aged 6-15 and we welcome parents to join the activities.

Encompass HK + Koding Kingdom SDG / STEM
