This is not a programme about the pandemic. This is a programme about “togetherness”.

About this event

The world has been in limbo for more than a year under the pandemic. During this time, many underlying issues surfaced, and some have become more troubling, such as the global political power-play, the imbalance in resources distribution, humanity’s selfish responses to the disaster, and the lack of concern for individuals in urban design and health policies. In an ideal world, the pandemic could have provided an opportune window for an overhaul as governments, scholars, and citizens review current practices and imagine a better world for mankind. Sadly, this appears to be quite impossible under the complicated social and political climates across the globe.

On personal levels, however, circumstances arising from a different life and working style, and new, unusual social conditions, have at least encouraged many to re-assess priorities, and to consider human relationships under a different light. Many now gather with families more often than ever, while others are forced to be apart from their loved ones. The new norm of isolation and the lack of socialisation may turn some into an “island”, but may also inspire a new (or renewed) understanding of “togetherness”.

This is not a programme about the pandemic. This is a programme about “togetherness”, in response to some of the social and psychological conditions that might be shared by most of us during this time. With a shared love for cinema and individual professional insights, five guest curators and this writer present our selection of films that explore alienation, separation, hopes, desires, and longing under dire circumstances. Their expertise ranges from various disciplines, including dramaturgy, theology, education, psychiatry, sociology of food, and film criticism.

At a time when human relationships are constantly shifting and being challenged, the idea of “connection” becomes paradoxical – it fascinates and perplexes; we yearn for it, yet we fear what may come with it. What is love? Numerous artists and filmmakers have endeavoured to explore, but the answer remains elusive. Whilst people can be together yet apart, let’s hope that we can be together even if apart. And a little bit of togetherness can go very far, so far as to restore the faith to love and be loved.

May this be a time to live, and a time to love.
