In “The Ministry for the Future,” the 2020 climate-catastrophe novel by Kim Stanley Robinson, a new financial tool helps pull the world back from the edge of a global ecological meltdown: the carbon coin.
About Dr. Delton Chen
Dr. Delton Chen is a global speaker and thought leader in the climate change and economic policy space. More than a decade ago, he developed the idea of a “Global Carbon Reward” policy to help reduce and remove carbon from the atmosphere at the speed and scale that are needed to stabilize the climate and meet the terms of the 2015 Paris Agreement. Dr. Chen believes that the Global Carbon Reward can fill the funding gap for climate mitigation and help protect communities and ecosystems from the ravages of climate change and over-consumption.
Imagine a global monetary policy, backed by the world’s central banks, that rewards all players - corporations, municipalities, individuals - for certified actions that effectively remove carbon from the atmosphere, increase biodiversity, and reduce environmental damage. Dr. Chen believes the Global Carbon Reward is a big and effective ‘carrot’ that could draw the world toward a livable future.
It’s an idea that’s already captured popular imagination. Dr. Chen’s Global Carbon Reward policy inspired the sci-fi author Kim Stanley Robinson’s game-changing “Carbon Coin” in his 2020 novel “The Ministry for the Future,” for example. Among the fictional characters in the book, Dr. Chen and the "Chen Paper" stand out as the real solution driver for the Ministry.
Dr. Delton Chen, founder of Global Carbon Reward (GCR), is a visiting geo-hydrologist from Brisbane, Australia. He holds a PhD in engineering from the University of Queensland.
