Event description
This webinar is the 2nd of 5 in our maths CPD series. It will focus on the accurate use of mathematical language in the classroom.

About this Event

In this webinar, we will explore how the consistent and accurate use of mathematical language in the classroom can have an immediate and positive impact on children’s attainment of this subject, in particular when solving problems. Children may well be fluent in solving equations given to them but, when words, puzzles or patterns are involved, the challenge becomes real. We will look at examples of questions that can be asked, questioning techniques as well as using STEM sentences to help children develop the ability to reason and express themselves in a mathematical way that actually makes sense to them and allows them to solve real life problems.

This webinar will be led by Raquel Thomson. It is part of a series of 5 Maths webinars that create a pathway of professional development for primary school teachers. Participants are invited to join all webinars to deepen skills in maths teaching across a variety of areas, or to just join single webinars that address specific areas of need.

Raquel Thomson is in her second year at Nord Anglia International School Hong Kong, currently in Year 5. In her 12th year of teaching, she was previously Head of Maths in the UK for 7 years (covering Reception to Year 8 maths curricula) where she led a team tasked with the development and embedding of a mastery approach to teaching and learning. Raquel loves everything about maths teaching and even in her spare time you will find her perusing Twitter for inspiration and further subject knowledge. She has been privileged to have received excellent CPD in the borough of Wandsworth where she worked for 10 years and is keen to share her experiences as well as learn from other maths enthusiasts.
