About this Event

First stop—living Life in Shum Shui Po

Date: 13th October 2019

Time: 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Meeting Point: Street level from Exit A, Shum Shui Po MTR Station

Quota: 15 (Free of charge; First-come, first served)

Route (A+B) as follow:

Route A—Around 2 hours

1. Nam Cheong Street Sitting-out Area (used to be an open water channel. In the 1960s, water channels in West Kowloon, draining mountain streams from the Lion Rock)

2. Nam Cheong Pawn Shop (business of a pawn shop; architectural features of the building)

3. Arcade style buildings still found on Nam Cheong Street (brief history of construction in Hong Kong)

4. Sham Shui Po Chinese Public Dispensary (the only existent government building that bears the old Chinese district name; how Yee Kuk Street got its name)

5. Kwan Tai Temple (the largest temple dedicated to Kwan Tai in Hong Kong)

6. The former Wai Kwun Apartment—a rounded corner house with wide overhang (interesting exchanges in terms of transport, trade, cargo and money between Hong Kong and Macao from the 1950s to 1980s)

Route B—around 45 mins (Optional)

7. The Garden Co., Ltd. (Hong Kong 1956 Riots; story of the building)

8. Mei Ho House (history of Hong Kong’s public housing)

1. The tour lasts for around 3 hours in total. Please be prepared in casual wear and sport shoes; be prepared with some snacks/ drinks when needed.

The Organizer—Lumieres Hong Kong

In 2017, Lumieres Hong Kong Festival made its debut in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong SAR. Inspired by, and in partnership with the Fête des Lumières de Lyon (France), the largest light festival in the world, Lumieres Hong Kong gathered over 500,000 participants during 3 nights in November 2017.

The 1st ever light festival in Hong Kong set light to some of the most iconic heritage sites of the City with the aim to highlight Hong Kong’s unique culture and history through light art. Lumieres Hong Kong returns on its second edition in November 2019 for 8 nights : Light installations, video projections and art pieces will be created by a selection of renowned local and international artists to invite the audience to rediscover the city under a new light.

The Co-host—Footprint Heritage

Established on 19/04/2016, Footprint Heritage is a collective that focus on “HongKong-ology” – to learn, to investigate and to promote Hong Kong. Members are experienced docents from various Hong Kong cultural institutions, and all interested in history and culture. They are knowledgeable and passionate to spread over the unique-ness of Hong Kong through different walking tours and social platforms. They also aim to enrich people’s life by inserting layers of meanings, both culturally and historically.
