Background: 

The Zubin Foundation conducted a 6 month research project to examine resources, interventions and strategies to support children from non-Chinese speaking family backgrounds in kindergarten. We wanted to find out what teaching support tools are currently available and what kindergarten school principals feel is most needed to help these students.

The research examines:

• current support measures for children from non-Chinese speaking families
• challenges faced by kindergarten teachers
• Chinese language attainment levels of CAL students
• what more can be done?

 Programme:

Guest Speakers:
	Dr Chan Shui Duen Dr Chan Shui Duen is Professor in the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her areas of scholarship include Chinese Language Teaching and Assessment, Bilingual Communication and Sociolinguistics. Professor Chan is a member of the Steering Committee for the implementation of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust ‘C-for-Chinese@JC’ Chinese language support project for non Chinese speaking children.
	Dr Tikky TO-CHAN Dr Tikky To-Chan is Assistant Professor of Department of Early Childhood Education and Co-director of Centre for Child and Family Science at The Education University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on young children’s literacy development, teaching and learning in early years. Dr Chan is  Co- Principal Investigator of the “Start From the Beginning I & II” projects funded by Oxfam Hong Kong, the HKSARG’s SIE Fund and Credit Suisse.
