Event description

Description

The main competitive edge of a start-up business is a new idea or innovation, and applying for a patent is important to protect your intellectual property. However, with many requirements, obtaining a patent can become very expensive and an entire patent application may be refused if not properly prepared, despite heavy investment of time and money.

Patent applicants need to know how to use an application strategy to make the process cost effective, without compromising the rights of their business.

Join Garage Academy for the first workshop in our two-part series on intellectual property with Edwin Siew, UK Chartered Patent Attorney of Lecto IP, to learn best practices for patent applications, including:

  • Patentability of an invention
  • Appreciating a patent specification
  • Patent filing strategy and costs
  • How to ensure that an invention from the R&D department is likely a good invention
  • Patent due diligence
  • Controversies in patent laws.

Part 2 of our series continues on Thursday 1st February - Introduction to Intellectual Property: Trademarks

About the Speaker

Edwin Siew is a UK Chartered Patent Attorney and a Registered Singapore Attorney, who specialises in intellectual property services, particularly patent, design and trademark registrations. He operates mainly in Hong Kong now but has practised in Singapore and Hong Kong for over 13 years. Edwin holds an MSc. from UMIST in Analytical Science and Instrumentation, and worked as a laboratory analyst and software engineer before training to be a patent attorney. The following is a non-exhaustive list of technical fields of inventions which Edwin has handled: mechanical inventions and gadgets of all sorts, electrical inventions including telecommunications devices such as antennae, chemical and material science inventions, food science products, information technology inventions such as electronic payment systems.

Hong Kong has seen a growing demand for intellectual property services in the last ten years but most companies had focused largely on quantity. However, it appears that patentees are now more mature in their expectations; there is a subtle but certain change to focus on patent quality in the last few years. Edwin meets this demand with notable experience in filing and prosecuting patent applications in Hong Kong, Singapore, PCT, USA, the PRC and many other less common countries, such as the Middle Eastern countries (GCC), South American such as Chile, Indochinese countries such as Laos. More specifically, Edwin specialises in drafting patent specifications to meet EP, UK (and Hong Kong), USA and PRC requirements. Edwin is also capable of supporting patent litigation by offering infringement opinion, and advises on legal issues relating to patents, such as inventorship, ownership and licensing rights etc.
