INTRO TO YIN ANATOMY with JOE BARNETT

Yang Dogs and Dragons: The Yang Archetypes

Target Area: Strength and fluidity of the whole being.

Dog: Upper Body

Dragon: Lower Body

There is no Yin without Yang.

Yin Yoga opens the body; Yang Yoga draws energy throughout the spaciousness. After the quiet stillness that follows a relaxing Yin Yoga pose, Yang efforts bring the Yogi back to the flow of the waking world. Whether it’s a gentle wiggling of the fingers/toes, or it’s a vibrant sequence that rolls the Yogi out of the resting pose and into a backbending, twisting, flying dragon, Yang Yoga is always the last step in the Yin Yoga process.

In this class we will discuss the energetic and anatomical differences between Yin efforts and Yang efforts in Yoga. We will consider some variations of the Yin/Yang Energy Curve of any sequence. The last half of the class will be a practice of some of the Yang sequences of Suzee and Paul Grilley, such as Mongoose Slides & Pops, Golden Seed, and Dragon Walking.

The Dog takes us out of the standard Yin Archetypes of the Yin Yoga Curriculum.

The Dog encompasses the study of upper body efforts, mostly dynamic muscular conditioning of the shoulders, neck and upper back. The nature of these areas of the body is more Yang and our techniques here usually reflect that. Yet there is a Yin potential in the Dog, a potential to open the upper body and relieve the stagnations of the joints through a long and steady release. We will explore this Yin potential.

The first step will be a look at the anatomy of Yin tissues as well as the complementary Yang anatomy. But the best part of the study is the practice. Please prepare your mind and your home space with pillows, blankets and bolsters for a quiet practice of surrender and join us in this next step of our Yin Archetype Series.

Part of the profits will go to Tucson Second Chance Bail Fund.
