The workshop:

Narrative writing and improvised theatre are two different arts, but they share one common trait: storytelling. In this workshop, we’ll go into tools and techniques to build a consistent story in our improvisations, working on the two pillars of every story: plot and characters.

Morning - Plot:

Goals and conflicts: even the simplest story is made of these two aspects, and our objective is to use them as we need. We will see how goals drive the story more consistently than conflicts do, in order to explore the story horizontally.

Hidden blocks: saying “no” is just one of the possible ways the scene can be blocked. There are other hidden ways, and we will try to identify (and avoid) them.

Afternoon - Characters (Only available if you book the full day workshop):

Character’s world: exploring their feelings, their past, their reactions, their status, to make them as 3-dimensional as possible. Variations in emotion and changes in status are also effective story-drivers.

Action and reaction: sometimes the story is based on action, more often it’s based on reaction, although this second aspect is often undervalued. Having a truthful reaction to what’s happening in the scene means being generous to your partners and to the scene itself.
