Things You Need To Know Before You Install Hurricane Impact Windows

learn:

  • how strong are hurricane impact windows
  • hurricane impact windows ratings
  • what are impact windows

Most people aren’t aware that there are rigorous testing procedures and installation standards that hurricane impact windows must meet in order to protect your home properly. Furthermore, just because a window is being marketed and sold as a hurricane impact window doesn’t mean that it is the right window for your house or condo.
This is very much a buyer-beware situation where you need to do your research to ensure you are getting the value and protection you need.
Here are 6 things you need to know before installing hurricane impact windows in your home or condo:
1. Wind-borne Debris Testing –Every exterior opening, including windows, must be protected from wind-borne debris caused by hurricanes. The two main elements of wind-borne debris testing are impact and pressure requirements. Performance of the windows during these tests will determine their rating.
Large-Missile Debris Test: The Window Must Be Able To Withstand The Impact Of A 9-Pound 2×4 Lumber Missile Striking End On At 50 Feet Per Second (34 Mph). The Product Must Then Pass Positive And Negative Wind Loads For 9,000 Cycles, With The Impact Creating No Hole Larger Than 1/16 X 5″ In The Interlayer Of The Glass.

Small-Missile Debris Test: The Window Must Be Able To Withstand Various Impacts With 10 Ball Bearings Travelling At A Speed Of 80 Feet Per Second (50 Mph). The Product Is Then Subjected To Wind Loads For 9,000 Cycles.

2. Height Matters – If you live in a building where your windows are located 30 feet or less above ground level, your windows must pass the large-missile test. If they are located 30 feet or more above ground level, they must pass either the large or small-missile tests.
3. Look for the Label – Any product that is commercially produced and tested will have a certificate or label that shows which standard(s) it has passed.
4. Know the Installation Requirements of the Zone You Live In – The geographical location of your home will dictate the wind zone and exposure category of your home, and therefore the installation specifications of your windows. Miami-Dade and Broward’s counties have the highest standards since they are identified as HVHZ (High-Velocity Hurricane Zone). As long as windows meet these standards, they are safe in other counties.
5. Check for a Building Permit – A building permit is required in most cases before the hurricane impact window can be installed. This is to your benefit, as the applicant for the building permit must provide information such as what is being installed, the manufacturers, product approval numbers and often the installation instructions. It is the job of the building department to confirm that the products meet the standards of the building.
6. Be Sure They Are Installed Properly. This is fairly obvious. The window needs to be installed according to the manufacturer’s installation requirements in order to perform optimally. If it’s not installed properly, it won’t protect as well. For further peace of mind, you can either inspect the installation job yourself or hire someone who is known to perform the inspection.
Don’t be fooled by advertising for windows that claim full hurricane protection. Knowing more about testing and installation requirements for hurricane impact windows can help you to ask the right questions and to make the best choice for hurricane protection of your home.
