About Me

Barney Yau has 8 years of design experience and has worked on over 200 projects with startups, SMEs and multinational corporations.

He has also taught design to over 750 students at Google Campus London, The University of Oxford, The London School of Economics, Imperial College London, The University of Warwick and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for over 3 years, and has run private design sessions with startups, hackathons and incubator cohorts.

Course Description

Even if you have an idea for an app or website, and you have someone on your team who can code, you still have to make your product something that people will want to use and share.

And while making your product look and feel good is part of what makes a good user experience, it’s actually an appreciation for design psychology and the ability to translate behavioural insights from your users into an ever-improving design that allows you to turn an initial good impression into extended use and engagement.

That’s why in this workshop, I’ll be going through…

• UX Design Principles

When a product is well designed, the effort and thought that has gone into its creation should be invisible — it’s the content and resulting functionality that users should see. This is great for users but can make learning from other products difficult for beginners. That’s why I’ll break down an existing design to reveal the UX Design principles at play and reveal the intention behind them.

• Design From Understanding

Understanding how people behave and gathering data from your users is one thing. Knowing what to do afterwards to improve your design is another. That’s why I’ll be showing you ways of using these insights to guide your design decision making process and creation of new design elements.

• How To Prototype

Relying on theory and personal preferences alone is rarely enough or desirable when designing products for users at scale. Prototyping your ideas for real-life testing is therefore essential. That’s why I’ll show you how to turn your ideas and sketches into interactive prototypes that people can use and give feedback on.
