   Kickstarting our programme alongside the “Mythologies: Surrealism and Beyond – Masterpieces from Centre Pompidou” exhibition, Professor Frank Vigneron will speak on all things Surrealist – From dreamy and absurd imagery, through to puzzling juxtapositions and notions of the unconscious, Surrealism has often boggled the minds of many, but its impact, has to this day, been ever-present.

Founded in the early 20th century by a medical student interested in the theories of Sigmund Freud, Surrealism became one of the most influential movements of modernist art. Its influence was felt in both the literary and the visual art worlds, introducing questions on the nature of human expression that have shaped their practice ever since. Although it could be argued that Surrealism, as a movement, did not survive its founder, André Breton, who passed away in the 1960s, its influence can still be felt in many aspects of present-day creative activities. This talk will present the main ideas developed by the artists of Surrealism, as well as an analysis of many of their most famous works.  

About the Speaker 

 Professor Frank Vigneron is Chair of the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong as well as a practicing artist, having held several solo exhibitions in Hong Kong and has taken part in both local and international shows. With extensive expertise, he dedicates his time teaching at CUHK the History of Western Art, theories of Modernism and Postmodernism in art, and Chinese and Western comparative aesthetics. He is a member of the International Association of Art Critics Hong Kong and a Museum Expert Adviser for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR.

為「超現實之外-- 巴黎龐比度中心藏品展」掀開序幕，韋一空教授將會於開幕講座中娓娓道來超現實主義的各種意義。從夢境、荒謬怪誕的影像，貫穿到令人迷惑的矛盾並置， 以及潛意識的概念，超現實主義從來都是令人驚歎的， 時至今天，它的影響力依然存在。

20世紀初，一位對佛洛依德理論興趣怏然的醫學系學生創立了現代藝術中極具影響力的超現實主義。超現實主義涵蓋文學和視覺藝術，賦予這些創作一種前所未有的問題意識，探究植根人類深處的欲求。雖然有人說超現實主義隨著它的創始人安德烈.布勒東1960年代的逝世，而退出時代舞台， 但是它的影響力在今天的各種創作中依然能夠感受到。

這個講座將會透過超現實主義藝術家們的作品，以及創作理念， 全面性地再一次認識超現實主義。

關於講者

韋一空教授，中文大學藝術系系主任，亦從事藝術創作，曾在香港舉辦個人畫展，並參與本土及海外國際展覽。2004年起於本系任教，主要教授西方藝術史、現代及後現代主義理論、中西比較美學理論等專題。自2010起，他是香港藝術學院學術委員會主席、香港藝術學院督導委員會成員和國際藝評人協會香港分會成員。
