Event description
Join us for a biodiversity excursion in Hoi ha in our glass-bottomed boat!

About this Event

We’ll visit Hoi Ha Wan, one of the first Marine Parks in Hong Kong, with an expert guide accompanying us to introduce the fauna and flora of the area.

With an AFCD-estimated 45,000 visitors in 2015, Hoi Ha Wan is Hong Kong’s most accessible Marine Park and is a popular destination for day trippers. Watch out for monkeys in the trees, cows on the road, and a stunning view over Long Harbour as the road drops down from Pak Tam Au. With a wealth of corals, including 64 of the 84 species of stony corals found in Hong Kong, Hoi Ha Wan has been a Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1986 and was gazetted as a Marine Park in 1996.

We will explore the diversity of marine life in the mangrove and sandy shore habitats at HHW. Our expert guide will be teaching animal classification and how to identify marine invertebrates. We’ll learn about the global threats facing our oceans and glimpse some of Hong Kong’s marine treasures aboard the World Wide Fund glass-bottom boat to observe coral inside the Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park

We’ll also explore the lime kiln in Hoi Ha Village and learn about calcium carbonate and baking soda. We’ll be doing an experiment where students will combine vinegar and baking soda in a water bottle to create a chemical reaction that inflates a balloon!

Learning outcomes

• Students will learn how to use iNaturalist and concepts of citizen science

• Students will learn develop a simple classification system for grouping organisms.

• Students will identify marine invertebrates

• Students will be able to observe corals

• Students will learn about chemical reactions that creates an effervescence
