1 Nov 2019 (FRI) - Workshop 1

Sub-theme: Right to Health: From International Perspectives to Local Actions

Day 1 begins with a broader view on the nexus of public health, law and human rights. The right to health, among other interrelated human rights, is a cornerstone between the health and legal sectors. Beyond healthcare services, what does it mean exactly? How is it enshrined in international, regional and domestic legal instruments? What are the roles of governments, professionals and members of the public in advancing this agenda?

By the end of workshop, participants will be able to

• Interpret the meaning of Right to Health and describe common misconceptions

• Describe the international updates on Right to Health in the Sustainable Development agenda

• Apply the concept of Right to Health in policy making and program planning

2 Nov 2019 (SAT) - Workshop 2

Sub-theme: Intellectual Property Law and Access to Affordable Medicines: a Primer

Day 2 will bring participants to explore pharmaceutical patents and policy. The patent system exists to promote innovation. However, patents may lead to higher price that strain on limited healthcare budget. The struggle for equitable access to affordable medicines, such as cancer treatments, has become a global issue. How do we balance the rights of innovators and the public? How does patent law differ around the world, and why does it matter?

By the end of workshop, participants will be able to

• Describe the impact of IP Law on promoting innovation and access to affordable medicines

• Explore the intercepts between IP Law, human rights and public health

• Describe the use and misconceptions in patent law, including compulsory licensing
