7th and 8th November 2019 - Hackathon: Generate innovative solutions with the aim of enabling smallholder farmers to earn their livelihood whilst being environmental stewards.

Introduction

The Lake Naivasha Basin is a critical ecosystem identified by the Government and WWF Kenya as a priority landscape area essential to the country's economy. The Lake Naivasha Basin is a threatened ecosystem due to unsustainable agricultural practices driven by current market and knowledge limitations as a key driver of local ecosystem degradation.

Design Challenge Statement

How Might We create high impact, cost effective innovative solution(s) that address unsustainable agriculture among smallholder farmers and facilitate a green/local/circular economy in the Lake Naivasha Basin Landscape.

Panda Labs Moonshot Challenge

A ‘moonshot solution’ is a visionary solution to an urgent and pressing problem. As the scale of global environmental and social challenges continues to increase, innovative solutions provide opportunities for new, scalable solutions.

The Panda Labs Moonshot Challenge seeks to empower communities as local environmental stewards and protectors of nature through innovative solutions.

WWF Panda Labs is calling on interested individuals, start-ups, government officials and corporate businesses, to partner with us to co-create innovative human-centered solutions with local communities, in order to ensure the security of the Lake Naivasha Basin Landscape.

Potential Solutions

Tools that raise awareness among smallholder farmers and consumers in the Lake Naivasha Basin Landscape, by providing access to information about:

  • How to produce green i.e.: How to engage in sustainable agricultural practices.
  • The importance of producing + buying ‘’green’.’
  • Tools or interventions that promote market linkages, locations to sell, align pricing structures, provide information facilitating buying/selling “green”, access to capital.
  • Tools or interventions that improve access to financial opportunities for farmers or those engaged in sustainable production and consumption.

Communities and Conservation

Around the world, local communities in developing and emerging economies are at the front line of natural resource conservation. These communities are the gatekeepers of our most precious landscapes. Many directly derive their livelihoods from their natural environment and are tasked with the natural resources they depend on for centuries.

WWF lays great emphasis on acknowledging that conservation of the environment cannot be successful without ensuring the successful livelihoods of these communities.

Who Should Attend:

  • Innovators across agriculture, fintech, energy, IoT, and other sectors along the agricultural supply chain with a working solution, prototype, on potential solutions for the challenge.
  • Startups looking for co-creation, integration and funding opportunities and working towards a solution within the realm of the problem statement.
  • Corporates interested in exploring a partnership with WWF Kenya and Panda Labs.

Why Attend:

Have the opportunity to develop innovative solutions that would receive support from WWF Panda Labs to be developed, expanded, scaled and replicated.
