OIE will be hosting a small group lunch conversation with Dr. Tayab Waseem and current Emergency Medicine resident at GW Hospital.

Tayab's journey from medical student to co-founder of the world's leading Open Source Generative AI company is an incredible story, and we're lucky enough to have him right here at GW to share it with us!

Dr. Waseem holds two bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Bioinformatics from Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed his MD and received his Ph.D. in Immunology from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He has done fellowships in public policy and venture capital.

During his medical training Dr. Waseem chaired the White House Office of Science and Technology Policies flagship project using technology to combat the COVID-19 pandemic with the creation of an AI powered live literature review. His work on this project led him to the world’s largest Open Source Generative AI company.

His groundbreaking work has been published in prestigious medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, and Nature, and he has shared his insights on the global stage at the S20, Paris Peace Conference, and UN World Data Forum. Dr. Waseem's impact through his participation on numerous biomedical and health technology boards, is underscored by an impressive portfolio of over 100 peer-reviewed publications, articles, presentations, and lectures.

He serves as a technical expert on AI for health for the WHO, a lead reviewer for the National Science Foundation, and an advisor to many boards. His unique blend of expertise in biomedical research, medicine, big data, venture capital, and policy has made him a highly sought-after consultant and keynote speaker for many groups including the WHO, the United Nations, and the White House OSTP.

He spends his days now as an Emergency Medicine resident at George Washington University Hospital where the focus of his clinical work is on the frontlines of healthcare, treating patients with a wide range of medical conditions. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Waseem continues to be actively involved in research and innovation. He leads interdisciplinary teams that explore the potential of artificial intelligence, genomics, and data-driven approaches to improve patient outcomes and streamline healthcare delivery.

Beyond the hospital walls, Dr. Waseem continues to shape public policy at the intersection of healthcare and technology, advising governments, international organizations, and startups on strategies that harness innovation to address global health challenges. He is a devoted mentor, inspiring the next generation of scientists, doctors, and entrepreneurs to pursue bold ideas and effect meaningful change in the world. His passion for lifelong learning and ability to communicate complex ideas have earned him a place at the forefront of discussions on the future of healthcare.
