What are Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs)?

OAEs are sounds generated from the inner ear (cochlea) in response to an external sound. They can be detected with machines as a marker for inner ear health and an easy way to screen for hearing loss.

What should I expect during from the hearing screening?

The Audiologist will check your child's ear canal with otoscopy first before performing OAE testing, which will take a total of 5 minutes or so. Results are indicated as pass or fail. If there is a need for a follow-up, this will be communicated with families in the report.

What happens if my child fails the screening?

Your child will be required to follow-up in detail at clinic. There are circumstances that may lead to failed OAE results that can be medically reversed or managed. In case your child would like assistance from ENT Laser, we are conveniently located in Central.
