About this event
Learn the craft that has shaped architecture for over 9,000 years — and is now at the forefront of sustainable design. Step into the world of Adobe construction and learn how to build solid, sustainable walls from the ground up! In this immersive workshop, you’ll discover the art of Adobe making and how to mix the perfect earth mortar for construction. Then, roll up your sleeves and get hands-on as you help build an Adobe wall, learning essential techniques and detailed finishes along the way.
You’ll also have the opportunity to create a stunning glass bottle wall, incorporating this unique, eco-friendly design element to your project. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be equipped with the skills and knowledge to craft your own earth-based structures and add artistic touches to your builds!
Adobe isn’t just history — it’s a critical future material in the global shift to sustainable building. Whether you’re an architecture student, designer, builder, or simply passionate about sustainability, this workshop gives you practical expertise you won’t find in textbooks or studios.
What makes this workshop special:
Hands-on techniques — Build a strong standing wall and learn all the skills required to make it long lasting.
Collaborative process — work as part of a team to create and leaving your mark on a real project
Wellness through making — experience the grounding, meditative qualities of working with earth — the cool, pliable textures and slow rhythm of hand-shaping are known to reduce stress and foster mindfulness
Sustainability in practice — explore how earth art isn’t just creative, but also climate-friendly: using local, low-impact, regenerative materials that connect us to place
By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a new understanding of the incredible material right beneath our feet , a richer understanding of natural materials, and the joy of having co-created something bigger than yourself. This is as much about the experience and connection as it is about the final result.
A unique collaboration between Alex from Bisque-kit, Ania from Ania Natural Materials, and Jenny from Ark Eden. This hands-on series is designed to introduce participants to sustainable building techniques, reconnect them with nature, and nurture creativity in the process.
Our expert instructors bring a wealth of knowledge and diverse experience from around the globe:
- Alex Stewart-Long is a registered architect and certified passive house designer with over 12 years of experience in sustainable architecture.
- Ania Chorzępa is an architectural designer, builder, and expert in natural materials, working with earth and fiber-based construction methods.
- Jenny Quinton is a pioneer in eco-education and permaculture, and the founder of Ark Eden, a permaculture community in Hong Kong.
Together, these three professionals bring expertise in architectural design, hands-on natural building, and environmental sustainability to create an unforgettable learning experience.
The day will begin with an introduction to the natural building techniques, followed by a morning and afternoon session. In between, participants will enjoy a freshly made vegetarian buffet lunch and light refreshments are available through out the day.
