Death Cafés are part of a global movement that began in London in 2011 and now spans more than 85 countries.

At these gatherings, people — often strangers — come together over food and drink to talk about death. There is no agenda, no advice, and no right or wrong way to share. The conversations are free-flowing, reflective, and often surprisingly light-hearted.

The purpose is simple yet profound: to bring death out of the shadows, so that we can talk more openly about how we live, age, and die.

Whether you are curious, contemplative, grieving, or simply interested in what it means to live well, you are warmly welcome to join.

About the Death Café Movement 關於死亡咖啡館運動

The first Death Café was held in London in 2011, inspired by Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz’s Café Mortel. The idea has since spread worldwide, with gatherings taking place in cafés, libraries, and community spaces across more than 85 countries.

Each Death Café provides a welcoming environment for people to share experiences, questions, and reflections about death — not in a morbid sense, but as a way to live with more presence, awareness, and intention.

What to Expect

1️⃣ Open conversation under the Chatham House Rule

Everything shared in the Death Café stays within the group. Participants are welcome to bring ideas or reflections from the discussion into their wider lives, but following the event, nothing identifying or personal should be attributed to any individual. Sharing non-specific themes or insights that arose in conversation is entirely fine.

2️⃣ Not counselling or therapy

A Death Café is not a support group or counselling session. It is a safe and informal space for open conversation — a chance to listen, reflect, and connect, rather than to seek or give advice.

3️⃣ No set agenda

There is no fixed topic or programme. Participants may share stories, raise questions, or simply listen. Every conversation takes its own direction, guided by the interests and comfort levels of those present. The exploration really depends on who is there.

4️⃣ Topics from past gatherings

Previous Death Cafés in Hong Kong have explored questions such as:

🔹 What does it mean to live well knowing life is finite?

🔹 How do different cultures and families approach death, remembrance, and ritual?

🔹 How can we talk about death more openly with children, parents, and friends?

🔹 What does “a good death” look like — and who decides?

🔹 How might we prepare practically and emotionally for the end of life?

5️⃣ Is this the first Death Café at Eaton HK?

Yes. While this is the first gathering at Eaton HK, Death Cafés have been hosted in other venues across Hong Kong since 2025. Each one brings together a unique mix of participants, perspectives, and insights — no two are ever the same.

About the Host 關於主持

Lizzie Chan is the first person based in Asia to be qualified as an elder mediator with the Elder Mediation International Network (EMIN). As Co-Director of Elder Mediation Development at the Hong Kong Mediation Society (HKMS), she supports older adults and families through mediation, advance care planning, and community initiatives. Her work includes founding the Silver Threads (銀絲有情) community — a WhatsApp group for open conversations about ageing, caregiving, and family transitions — as well as care home visits, creative projects, and book circles exploring ageing, resilience, and end-of-life care. She also hosts regular Death Cafés in Hong Kong to foster honest and compassionate dialogue about death, dying, and living meaningfully.

Lizzie Chan是亞洲首位獲得國際長者調解網絡（EMIN）認證的長者調解員。身為香港調解會（HKMS）長者調解發展部聯合總監，她透過調解、預立醫療照護計畫和社區活動為老年人及其家庭提供支援。她的工作包括創造「銀絲有情」社群——一個用於公開討論老化、照顧和家庭變遷的WhatsApp群組——以及開展養老院探訪、創意計畫和讀書會，探討老齡化、韌性和臨終關懷等主題。她還在香港定期舉辦「死亡咖啡館」，以促進關於死亡、臨終關懷和有意義生活的坦誠對話。
