《I’m Only My Body?》

《I’m Only My Body?》

#DANCELESS complex – Contingency Plan

Contingency Plan

In recent years, the local dance community has also tried, through various collaborative models, to transform and rethink the process of how works are produced under the traditional choreographic framework. Through the Contingency Plan, the curatorial team links up with local creators to present their works in a focused manner. These works are cross-regional and cross-medium in nature, with performers heavily involved in their conceptions, and experimenting with a co-collaboration model in an attempt to reposition the role where power is concentrated in traditional choreography. Creating is done under a mechanism of relative equality, and through the continuous dialogue and collisions of different media, cultures, aesthetics and experiences in the process, an alternative way of creating dance is potentially found.

I’m Only My Body? Pre-show Workshop

In the pre-show workshop, Holmes Cheung and Paula Wong will briefly introduce their artistic concerns and starting point of their creation, trying to unfold their thinking process of realizing their concepts to the form of the work, as well as their bodily practices in terms of self-image, identities and stereotypes.

Cheung is interested in the difference of interpretation of verbal movement description, relations between language and movement, and the alteration of meaning production; while Wong has her concerns in change in perspectives, manipulation of different sense of time, and shaping certain images to open up new ways of seeing body and reflect on the audiences’ own experience.

I’m Only My Body? Post-show Workshop

In this post-show workshop, Holmes Cheung and Paula Wong will be elaborating the materials and forms in their work in a more indepth manner.

Cheung, who is trained in acting before stepping into the realm of dance, will share his insights on developing movement languages with theatrical approaches. During his residency, he wrote a script with his own history interwoven with the performers’ impression of himself and different identities, which appears to be a semi-autobiography with a certain sense of openness for interpretation. Cheung will use this script as the core of the development of his work as well as the materials for the workshop participants to get a taste of his devising process.

Wong will use visual images of pop culture as the starting point of movement development, from building up the outside images to forming an inner narratives and impulses for the performers, participants are encouraged to acknowledge the nuanced differences between the extremes of stillness and rave, to convey the state of body which is in between of presencing, being viewed, and sensing ourselves.
