Capture the Flag (CtF), a game that demands the triple threat of wit, out-of-the-box thinking and interdisciplinary knowledge from contestants, is the one that originated in the InfoSec (information security) field.

Contestants solve cryptic messages and compromise servers or users to find “flags”, or answers. The team (or an individual) that accumulates the most points by solving simple questions, and finding flags through solving small challenges and riddles is crowned the winner.

This time, the BASE brings you a CtF game with a twist: our iteration aims to encourage students from non-tech backgrounds to participate and apply their knowledge to a new field. Students who are first-time hackers can have a peek at fields such as programming; reverse engineering; information security through extensive hands-on experience. On the other hand students with technical skills can expand their knowledge on arts, literature and humanities. The goal of this event is to celebrate the hacker and entrepreneur spirit; to have fun solving puzzles; most of all to promote the opening of our very own Hackerspace at HKUST.

2. How to play the game

  1. Find some teammates, form a group of up to 4 (strongly recommended to form a team, although you could take up the challenge on your own!). You may be able to find some teammates on the day of event as well.

  2. Register on FBCTF platform (link will be given on the day)

  3. Click on regions to answer quizzes or follow instructions to find the flag

  4. See how it works in action here:

3. How to win the game

The more challenges you beat, the more points you get. Higher difficulty challenges will carry more points, so teams should strategize the path of highest return.  At the end of the competition, the team with highest total points will be the winner! In the case of two different teams having the same points, whichever team was quickest to reach the highest points will be declared the winner. As such, teams are advised to submit the flags as soon as they obtain them.
