Sunday, Feb 22 from 4 pm to 7 pm EST
Overview

Listening Session with Gia Fu featuring Parker Mah Cultural Crossroads: The Afro-Latin Influences in East Asian Sounds.

Canton Mambo Presents

Cultural Crossroads: Afro-Latin Influences in East Asian Records

Join us at the BronxArtSpace for a very special in-person only listening session. Gia will trace the influences of Latin music on East Asian records pulled from her private collection, sung primarily in Cantonese and Mandarin, and place them in their historical and socio-cultural context.

We will also be exploring notable transpacific cross-currents between the two cultures, in a candid, record-focused conversation. Don’t miss the unique opportunity - for the 1st time in NYC! - to delve deep into the surprising connections that have brought together these two seemingly disparate cultures across time and space!

Gia Fu is a Hong Kong-born DJ, music producer, and cultural researcher working at the intersection of Chinese identity and Afro-Latin music, particularly salsa and its associated rhythms. As a Chinese woman in an Afro-Latin music scene, her practice challenges stereotypes while building bridges between cultures through sound and storytelling. She leads Canton Mambo 曼波 (@cantonmambo), a multidisciplinary project connecting communities through music, dance, and cultural exchange, highlighting diasporic ties between East Asia and the Latin American–Caribbean world.

Rhythm & Hues is a DJ, musician, cultural educator and community organizer currently based in Tio’tia:ke (Montreal), and a 4th generation Toisanese descendant. Resident DJ at La Murga, a popular salsa dura monthly, his specialty spans the afro-latin-brazilian-caribbean spectrum, with a predilection for vinyl. He also is a founding member of the JIA Foundation and one half of Chi Archives.
