Event description
Sacred choral music featuring pieces set to St. Francis' "Canticle of the Sun", famous church hymns and hymnodies by Wesley and Stanford

About this Event

This choral concert is a musical offering to St. Francis of Assisi.

St.Francis himself was not a composer. But he was a very religious and humble man who also wrote many poems that had touched musicians to set songs to them. These songs at St. Francis' time were called "laude" (Songs of Praise). The significance of the laude is that it started a new trend of sacred vocal music writing - that for the plain Christians' daily singing and singing in the brotherly fellowships (rather than for ritual use in Church ceremonies).

The Concert has three parts: (A) works set to St. Francis' most famous poem "Canticle of the Sun"; (B) well known congregational hymns such as "How Great Thou Art" and "Holy, Holy, Holy"; (C) hymnodies by famous 19th century hymnody composers such as Samuel Wesley and Charles Stanford.

The Concert is performed by the HK New Chamber Choir (NCC). Soprano Rosaline Pi is the music director and vocal coach of NCC.

Admission is free (pre-registeration is strongly advised).
