Event description

Description

The dominant narrative that surrounds the Hong Kong educational system is that is focuses on “teaching for the exam”. Students, primarily primary and secondary school students, are taught with the main purpose of doing well in their DSE examinations. This wear and tear of this form of education is starting to show. Hong Kong students report being under extreme pressure to perform well, which can then lead to mental health issues, or a host of other problems.

This event seeks to be forum where educators in Hong Kong, whom have introduced new and different educational curriculums may share their stories on how they (1) introduced their curriculum into the Hong Kong environment, (2) dealt with the various difficulties of operating such a unique system, and (3) the success they’ve had in developing more wholesome students.

Our panelists:

  • Renee Boey, Founder and Educational Director, Baker & Bloom - Renée is the founder and educational director of Baker & Bloom, an education center which seeks to foster in students the creative confidence necessary for innovation, leadership, and long-term success. Renee’s passion for teaching was sparked during her college years when she taught at a Boston public school and served as director of a citizenship program for immigrants. These experiences opened her eyes to the potentially life-changing impact of education and inspired her to pursue a career in the field. Since earning her bachelor’s and MPhil degrees at Harvard University and the University of Cambridge respectively, Renee has worked as a teacher, an educational consultant, and a school board member at various schools in Hong Kong. In addition to her work at Baker & Bloom, she serves as an advisor for Time Auction, the CoCoon Foundation, and the Jockey Club CoCoon Student Training in Entrepreneurship Program. She is a board director of the Harvard Club of Hong Kong, and co-chair of the Harvard Book Prize Committee, which she helped expand to include a mentorship program and Harvard Summer School scholarships for Hong Kong students.Renee is currently working on building a dual-language K-12 school that cultivates innovators of the future.

  • Chu Tsz Wing, Principal, Baptist Rainbow Primary School - Principal Chu has been responsible for the planning of the "Electronic Schoolbag as a Medium for Teaching, Learning and Assignment" programme since 2004. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of I.T. Leaders in Education (AiTLE) since 2004. Recently he gave a TEDx talk with the topic "Is education to constrain or set free". He has also received the “Innovative Teachers of Hong Kong” award and honored as “The Best of the Teachers in e-Learning Best Practice 2010 Competition”; as well as Microsoft Most Valued Teacher 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

  • Bibiann Wong, CEO & Cofounder, DreamStarter - Bibiann had an aspiration for education and became a secondary school teacher after graduation. However, she felt disappointed about the education system in which students' academic result is the only concern. "Childhood is the moment to create memory and acquire experience. The current schooling too often fails to appreciate students' talent and makes students with bad academic results feel inferior." Bibiann rethinks the role of education and its impact on students. Besides academic knowledge, what skills do our children need to meet future challenges? She gained the support of Erwin Huang, one of the famous social innovators in Hong Kong, and Chu Tsz-wing, the principal of Baptist Rainbow Primary School (BRP). And together they established DreamStarter, a new initiative that helps students make dreams come true. Pilot projects were being run in BRP. "Our pioneering effort in developing 'dreaming' as a subject in school will be widely recognised in the community." More than encouraging students to dream, Bibiann is also working hard to fulfil her own dream in education innovation.

  • Karen Tsang, Teaching Fellow, Teach4HK - Karen received her LLB and PCLL from the University of Hong Kong. Having grown up with several good teachers who guided her through her adversities. She always wondered how she could make an impact on teens. This is why she decided to join Teach4HK as a teaching fellow at Baptist Rainbow Primary School. She teaches P.3 English and P.1 General Studies. On top of that, She also leads a group of 14 students in a DreamStarter Project – Ice-cream Artists where her students develop and produce a healthy ice-cream product to spread happiness.
